How is recurrence detected after nasopharyngeal cancer treatment?
Follow-up combines symptom review, nasopharyngoscopy, neck examination, serial plasma EBV DNA and periodic MRI of the nasopharynx and neck; PET-CT is used when recurrence or distant metastasis is suspected. More than 90% of recurrences appear within five years, so visits are most frequent in the first two to three years.
In detail
New headache, nosebleeds, facial numbness, double vision, a new neck lump or a rising EBV DNA level should be assessed promptly. Salvage surgery, re-irradiation or systemic therapy may still be curative or disease-controlling in selected local recurrences, which is a reason to keep follow-up even after a good initial response.
