What does the EBV DNA blood test tell me?

Reviewed: 8 November 2026 By: Xiangpeng Liu, MD Topic: Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Answer length: short, citable
Quick answer

Plasma EBV DNA reflects tumour-derived viral DNA in the bloodstream. A high pre-treatment level is associated with more advanced disease and higher recurrence risk; a level that becomes undetectable after treatment suggests a good response, while a rising level on follow-up can signal recurrence before it is visible on imaging.

In detail

It is not a standalone diagnostic test and not all patients have detectable levels — roughly 40% of NPC patients can be EBV DNA negative in some series. It should be interpreted alongside nasopharyngoscopy, MRI and, when indicated, PET-CT.
