Thyroid Cancer · Prognosis & follow-up

What follow-up is needed after thyroid cancer treatment?

Reviewed: 8 November 2026 By: Xiangpeng Liu, MD Topic: Thyroid Cancer Answer length: short, citable
Quick answer

Follow-up usually combines neck ultrasound, serum thyroglobulin (with anti-thyroglobulin antibodies) for differentiated cancer after total thyroidectomy, TSH and free T4 to guide levothyroxine, and calcitonin/CEA for medullary cancer. Frequency is highest in the first one to two years and decreases as the risk of recurrence falls.

In detail

Bring home a written follow-up schedule, the operative and pathology reports, the radioactive iodine dose and whole-body scan report if applicable, and the exact levothyroxine dose. Thyroglobulin interpretation differs after lobectomy, so make sure your local doctor knows which operation was performed.
