What is the prognosis for sinonasal cancer?

Reviewed: 8 November 2026 By: Xiangpeng Liu, MD Topic: Sinonasal Cancer Answer length: short, citable
Quick answer

Outcome is driven more by histology and skull-base/orbital extension than by country. Localised, completely resected low-grade tumours can be controlled long-term, whereas sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma, mucosal melanoma and tumours with dural or brain involvement have substantially poorer survival. Overall five-year survival across all types is commonly reported around 50–60% in mixed series.

In detail

Published survival figures are population averages from registry data. Your own outlook depends on stage, HPV or EBV status, margins, nodal involvement, general health, smoking status during treatment and response to the first treatment.

Most recurrences occur within the first two to five years. Follow-up visits are frequent at first (every one to three months in year one) and become annual after year five, in line with NCCN survivorship guidance.
