What is the prognosis for salivary gland tumours?
Benign pleomorphic adenoma has excellent outcomes after complete excision. Low-grade malignant tumours often have five-year survival above 80%, while high-grade tumours, salivary duct carcinoma and node-positive disease do considerably worse. Adenoid cystic carcinoma is notable for late local recurrence and distant metastasis, so follow-up extends beyond five years; facial nerve function and chronic recurrence are the main quality-of-life issues.
In detail
Published survival figures are population averages from registry data. Your own outlook depends on stage, HPV or EBV status, margins, nodal involvement, general health, smoking status during treatment and response to the first treatment.
Most recurrences occur within the first two to five years. Follow-up visits are frequent at first (every one to three months in year one) and become annual after year five, in line with NCCN survivorship guidance.
