What is oral submucous fibrosis and does it turn into cancer?

Reviewed: 8 November 2026 By: Xiangpeng Liu, MD Topic: Oral Cavity Cancer Answer length: short, citable
Quick answer

Oral submucous fibrosis is a chronic, scarring condition caused mainly by areca nut chewing that progressively limits mouth opening and causes burning and stiffness. It is an oral potentially malignant disorder: a minority of cases undergo malignant transformation to squamous cell carcinoma, and the risk rises with continued areca nut use.

In detail

Stopping areca nut is the essential first step. Management includes mouth-opening exercises, nutritional support for difficulty eating, regular photographic surveillance and biopsy of any new ulcer or patch. See the oral precancer topic in this knowledge base for the full surveillance approach.
